How To Control Duckweed

Hello fellow Pondologists, and welcome to the second episode of “Pond Weed Problems”!
It starts small, but before you know it, it forms a "green concrete" mat that seals off your entire pond. You might think it’s just algae, but if you treat it like algae, you’re making a huge mistake. The standard "spray and pray" method here is dangerous; in fact, if you hit this weed too hard and too fast, you could wake up to a total fish kill.
Think ducks will eat it? Think blue dye will hide it? Think again. Today, we are going to debunk the most common pond myths and reveal the "secret sauce" to clearing this mess so the weeds die, but your fish stay alive.

1. Know Your Enemy: Duckweed vs. Watermeal
Duckweed, and its even smaller cousin watermeal, present frequent challenges for pond owners. From a distance, this thick, green blanket can easily be mistaken for algae. However, these are completely free-floating plants, meaning no part of them—not even the roots—is anchored to the pond bottom. Proper identification is your critical first step, as one of these plants is notoriously harder to control than the others.

Tip: You will very often find duckweed and watermeal growing together in a mixed community. Because watermeal is much harder to kill, it may survive an initial treatment that successfully kills the duckweed.
2. The Drivers of Proliferation & The "Green Concrete" Danger
Duckweed requires a steady supply of nutrients (primarily phosphorus) and sunlight to thrive. Excess nutrients usually come from fertilized lawn runoff, waterfowl waste, and decaying organic matter like leaves. However, duckweed has a second, equally important requirement: stagnant water. Because they are free-floating, these plants cannot establish a dense mat in water with surface agitation or flow. Under ideal stagnant and nutrient-rich conditions, duckweed populations can double in as little as 3 days.
The Danger of "Green Concrete" A severe infestation warrants immediate chemical intervention because it creates a "green concrete" effect.
● This complete mat blocks 100% of sunlight penetration, which kills off your submerged plants and beneficial planktonic algae.
● Since submerged plants are your pond's primary oxygen producers, photosynthesis in the water column grinds to a halt.
● Simultaneously, the mat severely limits the natural exchange of gasses between the water and the atmosphere.
● The end result is a high risk of a summer fish kill due to anoxia (a lack of dissolved oxygen).
3. Pre-Treatment Assessment: Testing the "Right of Way"
Before treating, you must calculate your pond's measurements and test your water conditions to give your chosen herbicide a clear path to work.
Step 1: Calculate Area and Volume
● Surface Acres: Used for contact sprays (like Diquat and Flumioxazin) that are applied directly onto the floating plants.
● Acre-Feet: Used for systemic herbicides (like Fluridone and Penoxsulam) that treat the entire water volume to achieve a specific concentration. (Formula: Surface Acres X Average Depth in feet = Acre-feet).
Step 2: "Right of Way" Water Testing
● Water Turbidity: If your pond is murky, Diquat won't work well because suspended sediment instantly binds to and deactivates the herbicide.
● Water pH: Flumioxazin degrades extremely rapidly in high-pH water (over 7.5). It should be applied in the early morning when the pond's pH naturally drops, or used in conjunction with an acidifying surfactant.
● Water Exchange: Fluridone requires a long contact time (30 to 90 days). If your pond is fed by a stream, has a constant outflow, or flushes heavily after rain, Fluridone will be diluted and washed out before it can work.
4. A Comparative Analysis of Duckweed Control Methods and Herbicides
When choosing a chemical intervention, you must decide between a fast-acting contact kill or a slow-acting systemic kill.

Pro-Tip: For a contact duckweed treatment, a combination concoction of Diquat and Flumioxazin is highly effective. Using an acidifying surfactant keeps the tank pH low, and unlike algaecide treatments where you break up the mat, your goal with duckweed is to lightly "lay" the solution droplets onto the tiny leaves.
5. Field Guide to Herbicide Application & Safety
The "Secret Weapon": Non-Ionic Surfactants
Duckweed and watermeal have a waxy, water-repellent outer cuticle. If you spray a water-based herbicide directly on them, it will bead up and roll right off, just like water on a freshly waxed car. To defeat this, you must use an aquatic-labeled, non-ionic surfactant. This acts as a wetting agent, breaking the surface tension of the water so the herbicide can spread across the waxy leaf and penetrate the plant. (Note: Do not use household dish soap; it is not labeled for aquatic use and will not work.)
Environmental Conditions
● Temperature: Apply when plants are actively growing, ideally when water is consistently above 60°F.
● Wind: Wind is your enemy when spraying floating weeds. Do not spray if wind speeds are above 10 mph to prevent off-target drift. Be wary of "dead calm" (0-3 mph) conditions which can indicate a temperature inversion. The "sweet spot" is a gentle, steady breeze of 3 to 8 mph.
Managing the Primary Risk: Oxygen Depletion
This is the most important safety warning of this guide. The danger with duckweed control is asphyxiation, not direct chemical toxicity.
● When a massive duckweed mat is killed with a fast-acting contact herbicide, the dead plants sink and decay.
● Decomposition is an aerobic process, meaning bacteria consume massive amounts of dissolved oxygen.
● This rapid drop in oxygen can cause a devastating fish kill.
● The Golden Rule: NEVER treat your entire pond at once with a fast-acting contact herbicide! Treat only 1/4 to 1/3 of the pond at a time, and wait 10-14 days for the pond's oxygen levels to recover before treating the next section. (The only exception is Fluridone, whose 30-to-90-day kill is slow enough to allow gradual decomposition without an oxygen crash).
6. Myth-Busting & Proactive Prevention
Chemicals are a temporary fix for a symptom. Long-term success requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to make your pond less hospitable to duckweed.
Effective Controls:
● Aeration and Surface Agitation: A bottom-diffused aeration system or surface aerator creates constant movement, physically preventing the plants from congregating and forming a mat.

● Nutrient Mitigation: Establish vegetative buffers to filter runoff, limit fertilizer use near the pond, and apply a phosphorus-binding agent to "reset" legacy nutrient loads in older ponds.
● Physical Removal: For small infestations, physically skim the duckweed off the surface using a fine-mesh net or a specialized pond rake.
Biological & Chemical Myths:
● Myth 1: "Grass Carp will solve it." Grass carp are picky eaters. They will often eat your desirable submerged plants first, wiping out beneficial vegetation before they ever touch the duckweed.
● Myth 2: "Ducks will eat it." While ducks eat duckweed, they also produce highly nitrogen-rich waste that directly fuels further duckweed blooms. Encouraging ducks to control your duckweed is like hiring an arsonist to put out a fire.
● Myth 3: "Aquatic dye will hide it." Dyes work by coloring the water to limit sunlight penetration to the pond bottom. Because duckweed floats on the surface above the dye, it still gets 100% of the sunlight. Dye is completely ineffective against floating plants and can actually make the infestation worse by killing competing submerged plants.
By addressing the root causes—excessive nutrients and stagnant water—and using targeted treatments when necessary, you can cultivate a balanced ecosystem and ensure a healthier, clearer pond for years to come!
